The Way I See It – I always like this time of year, but it can often get pretty hectic and a little wild
Here we go, it’s tourney time again! Time to hit the road and cover our area teams where ever possible. This week it will be off to Shelby on Saturday for the Northern Divisional Wrestling Tournament. Though CJI has had just one wrestler down the stretch, it is possible a second will be available for Divisionals. As of this writing I have not heard if Cory Kelly will join Kobe Tran at the divisional tournament or not. Cory suffered an injury a month ago and is still questionable.
After that is the All-Class State Tournament in Billings. I’m still working on trying to get there, if we have a qualifier, but it isn’t looking likely that I will be able to make the trip.
I have two more weeks to try and work it out so we will see.
I fully expect Kobe Tran to be in the running for a spot at state, but the road isn’t easy. He has shown he can wrestle with anyone in his weight-class and that means I could have a good reason to go to Billings.
After that the basketball tournament’s begin with the 9C District tourney’s in Havre. The top placing teams from the boys’ and girls’ tournament will travel to Great Falls the next week for the Northern C Divisional.
Looking at where our local teams are at present, I don’t know if I will be making the trip to Great Falls. If not, it will be an unusual situation. Usually either CJI or North Star send a team that far; in fact usually both do. This year North Star is in the best position with the conference’s #3 and #4 teams.
So how much time I will spend on the road is certainly up in the air. It may be very little. I’m not used to an early end to the Winter Season so that will be a bit weird for me if it happens.
I guess that will mean I have time to go do something else, as it will be a solid month before the Spring Season gets underway. Usually I get a week or so to figure out my schedule before getting the Spring Sports Preview put together. Then it is checking the schedules to see where I will be and when.
The upside for me is time to go to Little Guy wrestling tournament without having to worry about being somewhere else that weekend. Trying to balance that with the tournaments is always a bit tough.
But we will see!
North Star’s teams are certainly both in position to be a factor at the district tournament and the CJI girls could put it together again at just the right time. Just when you think it doesn’t look good, that’s when someone steps up and makes it interesting.
For those who are interested – Right now Box Elder is looking pretty tough on the girls side and Fort Benton is right behind them. North Star is a solid 7-3 in conference play, but Turner and Chinook aren’t far behind. The girls’ tourney is looking like a real close fight.
If records mean anything, it is a two horse race on the boys’ side with Box Elder and Hays-Lodgepole well out in front. It looks like Chinook, North Star and Fort Benton will be fighting it out for the #3 spot.
So, starting this week, if I look like I’m not quite sure where I’m going, it is just that time of the year! It is actually not as bad as it was a few years ago. Trying to get to both the 9C and 10C tournaments the same week actually took some real planning and, where I was going on Friday or Saturday depended on which teams were still in the tournament and a host of other factors.
Now I’m just old and confused in general!
I hope everyone as fun as the Winter Prep Season winds down. I know I will no matter what the outcomes. Good luck to both teams from CJI and North Star. I hope you give me a reason to be in Great Falls in a few weeks!Posted: by OverlieP
